Week 49 English classroom

This week in English, the children got into great depths learning about the (th) sound. They learnt lots of new words and worked a lot with pronunciation as well as putting their new knowledge into more complex sentences.

The children also had fun writing about what they would like for Christmas and did some extra research into more exciting gift ideas.

During math lessons we have worked on building on our knowledge of cardinal numbers. Firstly, we reminded ourselves what are cardinal numbers by playing a fun game. Later the students filled in worksheets. The main purpose of the task was to check if students are in the need of an individual time to fully comprehend the concept that was introduced to them last week.
Clocks and time was another of our focus points. We have worked with new vocabulary connected with time like am, pm and the clock hands. We have also looked into the best methods on how to tell the time.

Before the  holiday break,we will be focusing a lot on addition and the students are mapping their own addition book.

Weekly art lesson started with a creative craft. Second grade students focused on creating a decoration that will be used during their space travel show in the last week of  autumn term. We have not forgotten about the Christmas celebrations and we took some time from our lesson to make some Christmas and winter oriented crafts to decorate the English room. It’s beginning to look like Christmas.

Topic started with a movie about the Moon and his phases. Later, students looked through a book related to this topic to find useful information. In small groups, students focused on colouring circles according to the Moon phase describe under each picture. While performing this activity, children could use extra pedagogical tools like science books or projector pictures.

Later, students were  introduced to a scientific task, the Moon phase observation sheet. Every day for the next few weeks, the children need to  make an observation of the moon and sketch and record information. Students were given an example of some already finished research to give them them an idea of how to fill in the observation sheet at home.

Another topic lesson was devoted to travelling in the space and the students made their own  intergalactic passports. Later they wrote a story about their imaginary adventures during their travel time. Their imagination has no limits.

We also visited our new and improved library. Students learned about a new system of loaning out books and we had an opportunity to find some interesting new reading positions for our daily reading sessions.

This Friday we reflected on the past week and what we have been learning.

Homework

Anytime you can find the Moon, make an observation. These observations do not have to occur only at the principal phases. Anytime and anywhere you can see the Moon is a good time to make a sketch and record the requested information.

How to complete a Moon table section:
  1. Indicate the date
  2. Sketch what you observed.
  3. Indicate the Moon phases by writing the name.
  4. Fill in the time that you observed the Moon.

Remember your due date for observing a cycle of the Moon is December 16th.

If you have any questions or concerns don’t hesitate to email or meet with me at school.

Have a great weekend!
