English classroom week 47

Week  47 We started with another fascinating and educational activity connected to our topic, Time and Place, Earth and Space. We expanded our knowledge with interesting facts about the planets and the solar system. Students have used their inquiry skills to research and find out different information about the planets including their surface temperature etc. On top of that we have extended our vocabulary with words like asteroid, telescope, comet and satellite. In order to establish knowledge we’ve practice newly learned words by using fun worksheets.

To extend our knowledge about the solar system we have focused on research work and we have used Ipads in pairs as a research tool. One of my goals as a teacher during this activity was to encourage students to communicate with each other and master their cooperation skills which we have intensively practiced the last three weeks. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to explore the solar system in an exciting and fun way. We have used an amazing website made by NASA   http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/. This is a great website if you would like to have a look with your child at some amazing videos and pictures of the solar system.

During our weekly art lesson we have focused on measuring distance between the Sun and the planets. During the lesson students were given the opportunity to choose between different materials to make a planet. During this activity we have learned a new concept  “scale”. It was a lot of fun for the children to learn by making crafts. Our solar system is hanging in the English classroom at one of the windows. Come and have a look!

Practicing makes masters and this week we have been focusing on addition. The children have created their own books by mapping together the math they have done in class. I'm very excited to say that the second graders have been very eager to stay after lesson to work on their math books. It is extremely exciting to have such talented and eager students developing their math skills.

English lesson started with individual reading time and I have been able to spend a lot of individual time with the children to hear their reading. We have used the English books “Active reading” A, B and C depending on students level. Students have been learning new words and have been practicing writing in English.

During one of our writing assignments we have used a series of books “Discovering My World” by Melvin and Gilda Berger. Books are written in simple English and  they are full of fun facts and fascinating photos of the solar system. The series is divided into six books and the task was to read the book and write what the book was about. After the first task, each student had to read out aloud and he/she could pick up another book to continue performing the same activity. It was an amazing opportunity for the children to practice simple reading and writing in English as well as speak out loud in front of others and build their confidence in English language.

Writing and reading in English was a big part of this weeks English lessons and I decided to finish this week with another fun writing task connected to our topic. Students have written about “If I could go to the moon, I would take ....... with me”.

This Friday we reflected on the pass week and what have we been learning about and what we need to work on as well as what we are going to do during the weekend.

Homework

ART LESSON
Next week during art lesson second graders will create a solar system  with the help of foam balls, paint and milk cartons so we ask the parents if you could please make sure that on MONDAY the 23rd of November, please can your child bring an empty 1 l milk carton box.

I would like to sincerely thank all the parents which took the time from their busy schedules to visit me in the classroom and for all the wonderful words of encouragement. I appreciate all of your support and I am very grateful. Thank you very much for such a warm welcome.

If you have any questions or concerns don’t hesitate to email or meet with me at the school.

Have a great weekend!
