Week 50 started with an exciting topic lesson about spacecrafts and astronauts. We have learned how spacecrafts are built and how they look inside and outside. We have also been using a Nasa website where the students were introduced to an American astronaut called Chris Hadfield who became well known after posting different short videos of everyday life in space. The children were fascinated to find out how astronauts do everyday tasks in space like cook food, brush their teeth and even sleep. Later we watched a movie showing the Earth recorded by a satellite. As you can imagine, the children were absolutely amazed by the view.
During the next topic lesson, students were introduced to the concept of time zones. Later, they filled in a quiz with questions from our topic. They had to reflect on what they have learned in the past few weeks. After we mapped together our IPC books. You are more then welcome to come in and take a look at them.
We have found the time to explore even further about light and how it travel. Students watched different experiments as well as tested some of their own. We have focused on the subject of how light travels or how you can magnify or stretch different objects using water, oil and flashlights.
In English the children have been working with syllables by using sounds and techniques to break down words. The children found out great ways to use syllables to help them with their reading and writing and even saying the words correctly.
This week during the math lessons we have expanded our knowledge on solving problem tasks. We have been focusing on mathematical tasks where the students have to understand and analyze different instructions. We have worked on finishing our math books with the addition, shapes and time. It is very exciting to see such great progress in all the students.
During our weekly art lesson, we have focused on Christmas crafts and the final preparations for next weeks show “En resa till rymden”. We have made individual invitations/tickets for the classes that will come to see us and we have also have made a poster to advertise the show to the rest of the school so they know what grade 2 have been working with.
During our Friday assembly, we have been practicing some Christmas songs as well as looking at some of our key skills.( co-operation and communication). We also got the chance to share some of our work with the other grades and see what they have been learning.
This Friday we reflected on the past week and what have we been learning. We talked about some of the things we will learn and do next week.
We have also talked a lot about thoughtfulness and what it means to be kind to others. We have discussed how we can show kindness to to the people in our lives. It was very interesting to hear such young children speak with great passion about being kind and thoughtful to others without expecting anything in return. As a teacher I feel very proud that I can work with students that are so sensitive and kind. Later we made kindness cards for classmates sitting next to us. Students were asked to write something nice about another person and give that card to her/him.
Homework
Anytime you can find the Moon, make an observation. These observations do not have to occur only at the principal phases. Anytime and anywhere you can see the Moon is a good time to make a sketch and record the requested information.
How to complete a Moon table section:
- Indicate the date
- Sketch what you observed.
- Indicate the Moon phases by writing the name.
- Fill in the time that you observed the Moon.
Remember your due date for observing a cycle of the Moon is December 16th.
If you have any questions or concerns don’t hesitate to email or meet with me at the school.
Have a great weekend!
