Topic: bones and muscles

This week in topic we have been learning about bones and muscles.

We learned that the skeleton has four main functions:
Support
Protection
Movement
Blood Cells

We also learned about how bone is formed though a process called Ossification.
During Ossification cartilage is converted into bone using calcium and phosphate.

We learned that we have three kinds of muscles, Smooth, Cardiac and Skeletal. We also learned that our skeletal muscles work in pairs.
One muscle contracts and the other one relaxes.

Our fabulous models helped us learn the names of the muscles.
The names of the muscles often tell us about their shape or where they are located. For example the brachioradialis.

brachio - tells us it is located in the arm.

radialis - tells us it is located by the radius bone.

Next week we will be learning about some of our important organs and how to keep them healthy!

This week we have been discussing the learning process. When we learn something new we start at the beginning, then we practice and develop then we can do it on our own and are mastering.

It is important to know what we are learning and what we are trying to achieve.  In year 2 we will use the term WALT (We are learning to) and begin discussing and classifying our goals.

Our helper Daniel from the shaping up entry point, has made it through to compete in Ninja Warrior season 2.  We made some posters to support him! Keep a look out for Daniel when the show is aired this winter on kanal 5
