Maths Numeracy Knowledge

During the first few weeks back at school we will be revising and extending our numeracy knowledge. Numeracy knowledge includes information that we need to know in order to develop further in mathematics.
A knowledge of number bonds is important for students to develop in order to progress in addition and subtraction strategy development.

We started the week by looking at bonds to 10 and 20. We later went on to bonds to 100.
A bond is a set of two numbers that can be bonded together to make the total. For example, a bond to 10 could be 8 and 2.

Students develop mathematical knowledge by first using materials,  then imaging,  then autonomy. Within the IPC program these three phases of learning are often described as beginning, developing, and mastering.
At rådan we strive to make students aware of their own learning and use this vocabulary daily.

This week we learned how to use an abacus to make bonds to 100.

This week at home have a go at some number bonds. Start with bonds to 10 and progress from there.  For students already mastering bonds to 100 you could try using their knowledge in new ways for example subtraction problems using bonds to 100 as a strategy.
